Bio

Julie Kilpatrick, M.D., has been in private practice in Albuquerque, New Mexico since 1993. She is a Jungian psychotherapist and board certified Child and Adolescent, and General Psychiatrist, currently working with adults in depth psychotherapy. She is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of New Mexico.

Prior to settling in New Mexico in 1988, Dr. Kilpatrick pursued her work and education in several different places. She grew up in Oklahoma and received her BA in English from Colgate University. She taught high school English and coached for several years in Grosse Pointe, Michigan.  She then studied for a year at the C.G. Jung Institute in Zurich, Switzerland.

While completing pre-med studies in Chicago, she became a certified massage therapist. After earning her MD from the University of Illinois, Chicago, Dr. Kilpatrick completed both her residency in psychiatry and fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at the University of New Mexico. She received her Diplomate as a Jungian Analyst at the C.G. Jung Institute of Santa Fe in 2000, and has been both Treasurer as well as a Community Programs co-chair during her 20 years as an analyst member of that Institute.

Dr. Kilpatrick trained and certified with Mary Main and Erik Hesse in the Adult Attachment Interview. She also trained with Alan Sroufe and Elizabeth Carlson in the Strange Situation. She is certified as a practitioner in both Peter Levineʼs Somatic Experiencing and Sharon Stanleyʼs Somatic Transformation.

Dr. Kilpatrick collaborated in original published research in the area of attachment and PTSD, and on loneliness in psychiatric residency.  She has taught classes in psychodynamic psychotherapy, and in attachment theory to psychiatric residents at the UNM Department of Psychiatry, where she also has also done individual and group case supervision. She has also taught seminars and case colloquia for the Advanced Studies Program of the C.G. Jung Institute of Santa Fe, and has given many public lectures and workshops for the Instituteʼs Community Program.

While maintaining her Jungian depth psychological foundation, Dr. Kilpatrick continues to pursue her longstanding interest in the areas of embodiment and implicit experience, and enjoys teaching on topics within contemporary neuroscience, trauma, attachment theory, and a somatic-informed approach to depth psychotherapy.
